Somerset is where this whole project really took shape, and it shows — there are more pub walks here than anywhere else on the site, covering some of the most varied walking country in the South West. The Mendip Hills, riddled with gorges and old mine workings, account for several: the Swan Inn at Rowberrow, the Crown at Churchill, and the White Hart at Cross all sit within a few miles of Cheddar Gorge. Further west, the Quantocks rise sharply above Bicknoller and its Inn, while out on the edge of Exmoor, the Royal Oak at Withypool serves some of the wildest, least-crowded walking in the county.

In between, there's coast at Watchet, castle ruins at Nunney, and the Blackdown Hills above Staple Fitzpaine. Ten pubs and counting — pick a landscape, and there's a walk and a pint waiting at the end of it.
